Documentary Duo throws Fundraiser to Feed Your Soul – Oct. 14, 2012

Music, Art and more to celebrate launch of documentary.

TORONTO, ON – When Sonia Khan and Ghazala Malik set out to produce their documentary on Sufi Music, they knew they faced a big challenge. Both born in Pakistan, they knew that everyone at home was familiar with the genre, but in North America? They were faced with blank stares. Instead of feeling discouraged by the lack of knowledge, they were energized as it proved to them that this documentary was definitely needed

“When people in the West hear ‘Pakistan’, it automatically conjures up images of war, strife, and extremism” says Khan, the Executive Producer of Sufi Soul Searching. “We wanted to show this other side; the side that celebrates inclusiveness, spirituality, and of course music. People can spend an entire day dancing and singing at a mosque and it’s an amazing bonding experience to witness
and participate in. As we set out to raise funds for our documentary, we realized that throwing a fundraiser would be an amazing way to educate people about the music. A way to give them a taste of what to expect.”

The duo brainstormed ideas with friends and came up with the concept of “Sunday Soul”, a family friendly afternoon of music, art from established and up and coming South Asian talent, and of course various door prizes. When they started to approach people for assistance, the response was more than they could’ve hoped for.

“Once they heard the concept, people just started donating! It was really great to see how enthusiastic people were. Every penny from ticket sales will go towards the production. We couldn’t ask for anything more. Well, except for people to buy tickets!”

Each ticket can be redeemed for a pass to Eka Yoga Centre and also doubles as an automatic entry into the raffles.

With prizes that include a yoga package, and original work of art from Fourth Eye Gallery, and more, Sunday Soul will be held at Pacha Lounge (1305 Dundas Street West) on Sunday, October 14 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Music by the Techno Shaman.
Hosted by Deana Sumanac (CBC TV, The National)
