CARIBBEAN FILM: The Madonna Murti (Trinidad & Tobago)

A documentary entitled “The Madonna Murti” is produced and directed by Oyetayo Raymond Ojoade and Sharon Syriac.

Producer/Director: Oyetayo Raymond Ojoade, Sharon Syriac
Editor: Oyetayo Raymond Ojoade
Researcher/ Scriptwriter: Sharon Syriac
Year of Release: 2011; Reedited in 2013
Running Time: Approx. 50 minutes
Narrator: Leah Gordon

Where else in the world is black beautiful, baffling and brings together East and West? In South Trinidad at the Siparia Roman Catholic Church in that “city of sand”, a black female statue venerated by Catholics as the Virgin Mary and worshipped by Hindus as a black Hindu Goddess does just that!

To Catholics who follow her in street processions, the statue is known as “La Divina Pastora”, the Divine Shepherdess – to Hindus who charawe her by touching her arms and feet, she is hailed as ‘Sipari Mai’, (Mother of Siparia) “Siparee Ke Mai” or ‘Mother Kali’. As such, she remains the only symbiosis of Catholicism and Hinduism in the Western hemisphere.

Mystery shrouds her origin and about her, legends and myths abound. Though barely three feet tall when fully clothed, this statue draws pilgrims from every creed and race and the social, cultural and religious rites which accompany her devotions continue to intrigue the world. Well known to pilgrims and devotees who profess her numerous miracles of healings and answered prayers, she is particularly revered by barren women to whom she has given the gift of children and in turn, she receives many gifts of gold and grains, fabric and flowers.

Featuring candid interviews with poojaris, pilgrims, pundits and priests as well as academic experts who have tried to understand her, artists who have tried to capture her illusive image and writers who have tried to tell her story, The Madonna Murti utilizes narrative, drama, illustrations and song to tell the tale of a statue who offers health, hope, help and happiness to those who come to her most in need of it.

The documentary was screened at the following Film Festivals / Events:

  • Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival (TTFF) in 2011
    • NAPA Port of Spain in collaboration with UTT Research in Film Series programme in April 2012
  • Siparia Roman Catholic Church, Siparia in June 2012
  • India Diaspora Conference in St Vincent and the Grenadines in June 2012
  • Roman Catholic Archbishops House in April 2013 and June 2013
  • Fatima College Hall on 23rd September 2013
  • Columbia Gorge International Film Festival on 16th August 2013
  • Louisville International Festival of Film 12th October 2013

The Madonna Murti has won two International awards:

  • The Best Shots Competition ‘Awards of Excellence’ (La Jolla, California) in October 2012
  • Indie Fest ‘Awards of Merit’ in November 2013.

The Madonna Murti is certified by the Ministry of Arts and Multiculturalism under The National Registry of Artists & Cultural Workers program.

mSummit conference in Vancouver hosts Arlene Dickinson as keynote speaker

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, November 4, 2013 – The third annual mSummit conference is taking place on November 16 at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver, BC. Each year, the day long conference brings together some of the most influential mothers in business. Speakers at this year’s conference include Arlene Dickinson from CBC’s hit series Dragons’ Den as well as CEO of Venture Communications and, Tamara Taggart of CTV, Sandy Gerber of NEXT Marketing, and Jill Earthy of the Canadian Youth Business Foundation.

Presented by the Reinventing M Network, the third annual mSummit will feature several insightful career, financial and lifestyle workshops. There will also be two catered keynote sessions, ending with a wine and cheese fashion show. The mSummit conference is designed to help mothers make meaningful connections and introduce them to what it means to be a successful mompreneur.

“Our vision is simple, we want to connect working mothers with opportunities to learn from other inspiring working mothers and hopefully encourage their own reinvention and growth,” says Meghan Simington, founder of mSummit. “But most importantly, mSummit was created to provide women with the tools they need to be successful themselves.”

Simington understands there are an increasing number of women leaving the work force to start their own businesses. According to Statistics Canada, approximately 951,600 Canadian women are self-employed who run their own business and are taking it upon themselves to be their own agents of change.

“The new working mom has become a powerful group that is challenging traditions and taking on the ‘just a mom’ label with a revitalized sense of optimism,” says Simington. “These hard working women are well educated, savvy, and balancing a demanding lifestyle of family and career.”

The third annual mSummit takes place on November 16 at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver, BC and is expected to bring together over a thousand moms. For more information about mSummit visit the official website.  Full day passes area available here.

Interviews can be scheduled for all participants as well as AIDWYC’s Co-Presidents Jonathan Freedman and Ralph Steinberg:

CONTACT:  Stephen Weir at 416-801-3101 or 416-489-5868.

Gala Keynote Speaker, Jason Baldwin (West Memphis Three)—one of three teenagers wrongly imprisoned for 18 years for the murder of three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis, Arkansas.  Mr. Baldwin and his two co-accused were released in 2011.  Mr. Baldwin joins a long list of wrongly convicted Canadians and Americans who will be in Toronto to participate in this milestone event.

Conference –reflecting on past convictions through the lens of today’s developments in forensic sciences, research and evidence and working towards preventing and correcting wrongful convictions in the future.

Topics to be discussed by leading experts in their fields include: History of Innocence Work, Shaken Baby Syndrome, the Role of the Crown in Preventing Wrongful Convictions, the Role of Bias in the System, False Confessions/Plea Bargains, the relationship between Forensic Science and Miscarriages of Justice and the Long Way Home – the wrongly convicted and their families share their stories.

The conference will include exoneree and AIDWYC Board member Ron Dalton who was incarcerated for 9 years for a non-murder before being exonerated.  Also participating  amongst many others will be the Wrongly Convicted and their Families, Toronto lawyer and AIDWYC co-founder James Lockyer, New York lawyers and co-founder’s of the Innocence ProjectBarry Scheck and Peter Neufeld, the godfather of innocence work and founder of Centurion Ministries, James McCloskey,  co-host of the Fifth Estate, Linden MacIntyre, Special advisor to the Commissioner of the Elliot Lake Inquiry and former Special Advisor on wrongful convictions to the Department of Justice, Stephen Bindman, retired Kingston, Ontario Chief of Police, William Closs, Judge Anne Derrick, QC of the Provincial and Family Court of Nova Scotia, Professor Tim Moore from the Department  of Psychology at Glendon College , who is a consultant and expert witness in criminal trials both in Canada and the United States, Justice Murray Sinclair, Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.

The media and public are welcome to attend “Back to the Future”.  Tickets can be purchased through AIDWYC’s website

Jason Baldwin, Damien Echols and Jessie Misskelley Jr. (West Memphis Three) were tried and convicted as teenagers in 1994 of the 1993 murders of three boys.  Mr. Echols was sentenced to death; Mr. Misskelley Jr. and Jason Baldwin were sentenced to life imprisonment with two 20-year sentences added to Mr. Misskelley’s life sentence.

The West Memphis Three were released in part due to dedicated attorneys, a skilled private investigator, a series of documentary films produced by HBO, half a dozen books; hundreds of magazine, newspaper, and television features which drew international attention to their case.  Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan will be releasing a feature film, Devil’s Knot, the true story of the West Memphis Three case, starring Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth.

Atom Egoyan has dramatized for the screen the story of the West Memphis Three.  The film previewed to critical acclaim at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) earlier this fall.  Critics see this as an important film that is as compelling and disturbing as the truth itself.  Egoyan is a master at telling tales about deeply misunderstood outsiders, their families and communities, and their darkest fantasies.  In Devil’s Knot Egoyan details the small-town lives of ordinary people befuddled and angered by the senseless killing in their ostensibly safe town and the private investigator for whom the sum of the case’s parts doesn’t quite add up, and who is driven to get at the truth.

AIDWYC’s “Back to the Future” conference will educate the legal profession, the judiciary and law enforcement and compel them to respect society’s ethical obligation to reverse wrongful convictions when evidence proves a miscarriage of justice has occurred.

A number of high profile musicians and actors including Eddie Vedder, the Dixie Chicks and Johnnie Depp worked hard to secure their release based on flaws in their original trial and DNA evidence.

The Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted is a national, non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to identifying, advocating for, and exonerating individuals convicted of a crime that they did not commit and to preventing such injustices in the future through education and reform.
